Jungle Trekking/Mountain Biking
I don't know about you people but when was the last time you went trekking. If any of you happened to be in Sabah, take a day and walk rainforest. I suggest Tudan to Pukak. This is the name of two villages; Tudan where you start and Pukak, where it ends. Its a day walk and you get to see Kadazandusun, making a living, on the hillsides of the Crocker Range.
Here is the journal, in case you really want to.
Note: Kg. is short for Kampong, which means Village.
We left Kota Kinabalu at 4pm. Take any bus going up to Tambunan or Keningau. Tell the bus driver to drop you off at the Tudan road junction. At the junction, there is a road sign which says "SK Sinoah 15km Tudan". There is a row of roadside stalls on the right of this junction.
We started at 5pm at Tudan road entrance.First 15 minutes its uphill and then all downhill to Tudan. As you walk up, you will see a steel observation tower sitting on the ridge 50 to 60 above you.Its 4km to Tudan.
6pm - Kg. Tudan and trekked 7km to Kg. Poring. Take the road down the hill passing through a bamboo gate. After this, we crossed a solid wooden concrete bridge, a low house on the right by a stream and another house, with a big front and side yards suitable for camping. This house marks Kg Pantai and we passed it at 7pm.
7.00pm - Kg Pantai - We saw four Landrovers in 2 hours. People here like Landrovers.
8.30pm - Kg Poring - The road to this village is on the hillside with the valley on your left.We camped here, by the school. There is a waterpipe by the stair, on the left. Ask the nightwatchman, permission to camp. He might even let you stay in the classroom or watch TV.
8.00am - Start by following the hillside trail. The trail entrance is below the thatched house, on the left. The house is leftmost, below the only primary school (Grade 1 to 5) SK Poring. If you did not pass a broken cable footbridge (do not walk on it :]) after 10 minutes, you must have taken the wrong turn and you are on your way down to the river. Walk back up and take the other trail at the trail junction. The trail to Kg. Tunggau is level, following the hillside.
9.00am - Kg. Tunggau. A small kampong with 4 or 5 houses, on the hillside. You will notice almost all the houses in this area has installed solar panel, with enough juice to run a cable TV and 3 flourescent tubes. From this village, the trail is wet, slippery downhill and you should reach the cabled footbridge within the hour.
10 am - First footbridge. Within the hour you ought to be traversing a hillside padi field. From here on in, the sound of the Tuaran white water is below on your right, about 400 metres down the valley. You are walking on tree shaded footpath.
11 am - Kg. Kimanuk - there is a chapel above the first house. The first coconut tree on this trail, from this end. The trail skirts the hillside. Don't take the trail that either goes up or down.
12 am - You should come across a barbed fenced blue house. There is a pipe water by the front gate. The Headman lives here. And before this house, about 5 minutes back, a bamboo thatched hut overlooking a small padi field, by the river. Take the trail which is on the left of this house.
12.15 - A cabled footbridge with a very big rock under it, midway. There is a couple of house on the hill in front of you. Take the trail on your right, skirt across the hill side.
12.30 - Kg. Gonipis - after this village, there is a gravel road all the way to Pukak. There is a small canteen/tuck shop here. If you are lucky, you could get a ride. The next village is about an hour on foot.
2.00 - Kg Polod. A few minutes after this village, there is a big clearing by the side of the road, on the right. It has a big tree with a waterpipe, with the pipeline running across and above the road.
2.20 - Kg Mantob 2 - Its a village by the river Mangkaladon. There is a concrete bridge across the river.Just after the bridge, there is another road to the left that leads to Kg. Ruminding. Don't take this road. Take the road going straight. This leads to Mantob 1, in 40 minutes.
3.00 - Kg. Mantob 1 - Roughly another 6km to reach Pukak.
3.20 - Kg. Tulung - A Landrover gave us a ride to Pukak. It has been raining heavy since the Mangkaladon Bridge
- Kg. Sinorit
- Kg. Waig Waig
3.50 - Pukak - Get a bus. It cost RM 4 to get to Tamparuli.RM 3 to Kota Kinabalu.
- It takes roughly 8 hours from Kg Poring To Pukak, on foot. And 3 hours from the Tudan road entrance to Kg Poring.
- Don't rely totally on any maps for this area. Unless given by someone who has gone there and mark it accordingly. At best, local map only shows the river but not the trail. Some of the villages listed on the map, is either non existence or has cease. For instance, there is no Kg Apin Apin and Kg Simbulon has cease to exist. Its villagers has moved elsewhere. The best thing you can do is to ask for direction or go early on Sunday morning from Kg Poring. There are primary school children whom leaves for Kg Gonipis early at 7am from Kg Poring. Go with them. Its faster following the native than figuring out yourself the way.
